Is this worth your time?

A useful route for a small enterprise with a genuine eligible diaspora supporter and its own contribution. It is not a zero-contribution grant, so work out affordability before beginning registration.

Ubunifu editorial assessment, not an organiser eligibility decision.

A stronger fit when...

New or existing Kenyan micro and small businesses with up to 20 employees. A supporter living in an eligible EU country, Switzerland or Norway initiates the process and invites the entrepreneur. Sector coverage is broad.

Pause or look elsewhere when...

An applicant without an eligible supporter or unable to provide the required private contribution. WIDU's Original Grant must not be confused with its separately closed Kenya local calls.

What the support actually means

For a first round, the published contribution ratio is 1:1:2: entrepreneur and donor contribute equally, and WIDU matches their combined investment, up to EUR 3,000. Coaching is included. Subsequent rounds have different ratios and conditions.

Costs and commitments: Entrepreneur and diaspora co-financing is required; this is not a no-contribution grant.

Your costs, time and commitments

Each private contributor's first-round amount is EUR 150-1,500. Illustration: EUR 500 from each could correspond to EUR 1,000 from WIDU, subject to approval. Do not spend in anticipation of reimbursement; follow the platform's approval sequence.

How selection or access works

This is a documented investment and coaching process, not simply a public popularity contest. The platform checks the parties and proposed business investment. An invitation is not confirmation of a grant.

Preparation and application steps

Get these ready first

Preparation advice; the organiser determines mandatory documents.

  • Agree the real private contributions and their source with the supporter.
  • Prepare a specific investment plan, supplier estimates and the business information requested.
  • Check identification, residence evidence and how transfers and expenditure will be documented.

Your next steps

  1. Have the eligible donor start on the official WIDU platform.
  2. Complete the invitation and investment-plan steps together.
  3. Wait for required approvals and use the assigned coaching; retain payment and spending records.
